Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I have to install software?
The ChessJam application is built on Adobe AIR which makes it possible to deploy applications that run on Windows, MacOS and Linux. We wanted to have full control over every aspect of the application's appearance and behavior. The application has auto-update built-in so you will always have the latest features without having to re-install. Also, there are many features built into AIR that we take advantage of including very fast startup time, network detection/reconnection, idle detection, webkit and more. The software contains no adware, spyware, etc. and can be cleanly uninstalled any time.
Why only English?
Other languages including French, German, Russian and Spanish will be supported soon - it's high on our priority list. Let us know if you would like to help translate! :-)
When will ChessJam support correspondence chess (games that last days/weeks)?
Very soon, it's planned for our 3.0 release in the next few weeks. We'll be opening a new tower just for it!
Do games with robots impact my rating and stats?
No - games with robots do not count. You can use them for practice as much as you like without it changing your stats or rating.
Can I play more than one game at a time?
ChessJam supports up to 6 concurrent games as of version 2.1. If your brain can handle it, ChessJam can.
Can I take back a move?
We try to keep the gaming experience in ChessJam identical to a real face-to-face game, and they typically do not allow taking back moves. We might offer this on unrated games in the future.
How do I abort a game?
If you start a game with someone and they don't respond, you can simply forfeit and it will abort the game without consequences to your rating and stats. There must be at least 3 moves before the game counts.
How are ratings calculated?
The rating system is explained in our recent blog post.
How do I report bugs?
Please use the forums for bug reports, feature suggestions or any other comments. We monitor them closely.
